Report from Vice Commodore Peter Gebhardt

Dear Members

With winter now upon us, there is still plenty happening around the Club. Over the recent long weekend, I had the pleasure of welcoming Opti sailors and their families for the King’s Cup Regatta. It was a great reminder that sailing is very much a year-round activity — even if it does require a few extra layers at this time of year.

For those considering venturing into racing, the winter conditions and our Saturday racing format provide an ideal way to ease in and build confidence on the water. The Costello Pursuit Series begins on 27 June and continues every alternate weekend and on the other week the Blizzard Fleet series is run. Our next monthly Sunday pursuit race is scheduled for Sunday 28 June.

If winter racing is not for you, this is also a good time to check over your vessel and carry out any maintenance before the warmer weather returns. Audit checklists are available from the Australian Sailing website, and the Category 5/5N audit forms provide a useful starting point for both sailing and motor cruising. For those racing, or intending to race, please remember that a Cat 6 self-audit is compulsory and returned to the sailing office.

While you are completing winter checks, please also keep safety front of mind. If you are working alone at the marina, take a moment to identify the nearest safety ladders along the walkway and lower your boat ladder in case of an emergency. You should also consider wearing a PFD if you are working on or near the water.

Wishing you all a safe and enjoyable week ahead.
