Cruising News 14/7

Guest Speaker Dinner:

This coming Friday, July 17th, we are delighted to have Norm Boreham, president of the “Friends of Alma Doepel” organisation, as the guest speaker at our monthly Guest Speaker Dinner. Norm has a short presentation in which he will relate the history of the Alma, how the restoration is progressing, plans and next steps, leading up to taking the ship across Bass Strait to participate in the 2027 Hobart Wooden Boat Festival (5-8 Feb).  All welcome to come along for great company with sailing colleagues, dinner, and a slice of Australian sailing history.

As usual, after gathering in the Members Bar for the weekly announcements and members’ draw at 7:00pm, please join us in the Bayview Room for the dinner and talk. Everyone is welcome, but please book now, as bookings are essential for catering purposes. To book, please contact Reception on 9592 3092 or email [email protected] prior to the close of business on Wednesday July 15th.   $40.00 per person is payable on the night, inclusive of a two-course dinner.

Cruiser of the Year:

The 2026 “Cruiser of the Year” award was presented at last Friday evening’s Presentation Night to Dave Stripp. Dave, after spending a few months helping prepare Aquacadabra, sailed with Rob Hurrell from Melbourne, up the East Coast of Australia, across the top, and then through Eastern Indonesia as far as Flores. After returning to Melbourne, Dave has actively participated in Cruising Group events in his own boat Wirraway, including this Year’s Bay Cruise and the recent Wyndham Harbour Cruise. Dave has subsequently added more cruising miles by assisting a colleague sail their catamaran from Melbourne up to Sydney.
