Sadly, there were no close games this round until the last game on Sunday evening. The Bombers’ fans finally had something to cheer about.
On the field
Last Thursday night, St Kilda supporters had reason to hope that they could break their millennium drought at Geelong, where they had not won since 1999. The Cats had lost three straight and made seven changes. Despite this, St Kilda’s hopes were dashed in the first quarter, when Geelong kicked the first 26 points of the game. The Saints never recovered. The final margin was 27 points. On Friday night, the Adelaide Crows inflicted a 16-point loss on second-place Sydney at the SCG. It was the Swans’ first loss of the season at home, while the Crows moved up to fifth, only a game behind Sydney. Final score was: Adelaide 13.9.87 defeated Sydney 10.11.71.
On Saturday, league-leading Fremantle overcame a sub-par first half to defeat Port Adelaide 15.13.103 to 11.9.75 at the Adelaide Oval. The win gives the Dockers a three-game lead at the top of the ladder and all but assures them of the minor premiership. North Melbourne started strongly against the Melbourne Demons at Marvel Stadium, leading by 25 points in the first quarter. From there, it was all downhill for the Shinboners and only a few late goals in the final term made the game look close. It wasn’t! Melbourne 13.14.92 defeated North Melbourne 11.10.76. On Saturday night, Collingwood continued their winning ways against Carlton, recording a 21-point victory at the MCG before a crowd of 83,885.
On Sunday, Hawthorn recorded a big 70-point win over Richmond at the MCG. At the Gold Coast, the visiting Western Bulldogs moved up to 7th on the ladder with an 11.11.77 to 9.14.68 victory. The Doggies kicked away in the third quarter to set up their win. It was the Suns’ eighth straight loss. In the final game, Essendon shocked visiting GWS with a gutsy 3-point victory over the Giants at Marvel Stadium. It was the Bombers’ second win of the season and their first since April’s Gather Round.
