Cruising News 31/3

For our April Guest Speaker Dinner, we are pleased to have Commander Helen Ward (RAN) to relate the story of HMVS Cerberus, the first Australian steam powered ironclad warship, commissioned shortly after the Australian colonial governments had been empowered to acquire and man naval vessels. As most will know, the scuttled hulk of the Cerberus remains today, forming a breakwater off the beach at Black Rock.

Commander Ward has an interest in Naval history, and will focus her talk on the Cerberus story, in particular, the arduous delivery voyage from Britain to Melbourne. She will also touch on other significant early Victorian Naval events and history.

As usual, after gathering in the Members Bar for the weekly announcements and members’ draw at 7:00pm, please join us in the Bayview Room for the dinner and talk

A reminder that bookings are essential for catering purposes. To book, please contact Reception on 9592 3092 or email [email protected] prior to the close of business on Wednesday April 16th.   $40.00 per person is payable on the night, inclusive of a two-course dinner.

Meanwhile, Robina and Brenton Smith on Chakana are about to depart Kingscote, Kangaroo Island, on their voyage back to Melbourne after extensive cruising in South Australian waters over the past couple of months. To date, they have cruised over 1200NM, venturing as Whyalla after spending time exploring Port Lincoln’s cruising grounds and the Sir Joseph Banks Group of islands, as well as visiting Kangaroo Island and Adelaide. Wishing Brenton and Robina fair winds and gentle seas for the trip home.
