Cruising News 3/2

At the time of writing, RBYC cruisers Brenton and Robina Smith on Chakana, and Craig Walton, Aldy Felix and Steve Dickson on Y-knot had arrived at American River, Kangaroo Island. They enjoyed a largely smooth three-day sail from Queenscliff, encountering occasional rain and fog along the way and with increasing wind and seas over the final 12 hours. In the meanwhile, past Commodore Peter Strain and crew on It’s a Privilege are enjoying local seafood dinners while sitting out strong winds in Grassy harbour, King Island.

Our first Guest Speaker Dinner for 2026 will be on Friday 20th February. Join Rob Hurrell & his crew as they share the story of Aquacadabra’s participation in the Sail to Indonesia Rally, sailing east to west across Indonesia over four months last year.

Indonesia isn’t just a destination. It’s over 17,000 islands, spectacular scenery, active volcanoes, remote reefs, and some of the most welcoming & challenging sailing you’ll find anywhere in the world

Covering over 3,500 nautical miles, the voyage began with a 2,300nm passage up Australia’s east coast to Horn Island, followed by cruising through some of the most remote and spectacular parts of Indonesia from June to October.

This presentation will cover:

  • Rally preparation and yacht readiness
  • Provisioning and logistics for extended cruising
  • Customs, immigration, and clearance realities
  • Navigation, weather, and seasonal planning
  • Anchorages, cultures, and cruising highlights
  • Lessons learned from four months in Indonesian waters

Packed with practical advice, real-world experience, and stunning imagery, this talk is a must for sailors and anyone considering cruising Indonesia.

Informative, honest, and inspiring.

We have had good interest in an “Explore the Bay” cruise in company for a week or so from Saturday February 21st onwards. Some 6 to 8 boats look like participating and we look forward to some enjoyable and social pottering around the Bay by boat.
