On the field: Both Carlton and Geelong were coming off a bye, but the Blues were the ones to hit the ground running. They led by six goals at halftime, and a nine-goal final term saw the margin blow out to 63 points. It was an impressive, percentage-boosting win, which keeps the Blues in second spot on the ladder. On Saturday afternoon, Port Adelaide hosted Brisbane. On this day, the home team was celebrating the 20th anniversary of their lone premiership win in 2004 – that victory was against the Lions. On Saturday, however, the Power and their supporters had little else to cheer about as their team did not show up and was duly crushed by Brisbane who scored 23.14.152 to Port’s 10.13.73. Port is a better team than they showed on Saturday, but it makes you wonder what causes such a bad lapse in such an important game.
In the ‘Battle of the Bridge,’ the Sydney Swans flexed their muscles for the second time this year versus Greater Western. They kicked away in the second & third quarters, booting nine goals in a row to set up the 27-point victory. The Swans could afford to ease up a bit in the final term when they allowed the Giants to kick the last five goals of the game. Melbourne had a very lucky escape in their Saturday night game versus North Melbourne at the MCG. After opening up a 39-point lead with 3:58 remaining in the third quarter, the Dees failed to register another point for the rest of the game! In the final term, the ‘Roos surged forward repeatedly, kicking the only five goals of the term. Melbourne grimly held on to win 11.4.70 to 10.7.67 but were very fortunate to do so.
In the Sunday games, Essendon defeated West Coast by 5 goals at Marvel. The margin flatters the Bombers, as the Eagles provided a stern challenge for the home team today. Unfortunately for WCE, they had bad concentration lapses near the end of each of the final three quarters that led to many goals by Essendon. Those lapses really cost the visitors. In the final game, Gold Coast traveled to Perth to face the Freo Dockers. The Suns have really struggled on the road this season and it was more of the same today. Freo’s 20-point win pushed them up to fifth on the ladder.
