News From GC – Cathy Hurley

There’s something for everyone at RBYC over winter.

it’s probably the time of year that offers the greatest diversity of experiences for our club members.

While many brave the cold conditions on Port Phillip, others head for warmer waters or choose indoor pursuits.

I recently had the opportunity to visit one of our reciprocal clubs, The Royal Canadian Yacht Club in Toronto. It’s always interesting to visit other clubs snd see how they operate. RCYC has two club houses for winter and summer and employs around 200 people. The summer club house is on an island in the lake and has tennis courts snd s swimming pool as well as regular summer sailing and a lovely old club house. I was made to feel very welcome and I encourage all members who get the chance to visit our reciprocal clubs and share our love of sailing.

Returning home it’s great to see the range of activities at our club. From sharing the excitement of the World Cup Soccer, to bridge lessons to film nights, there really is something for everyone.

It’s also peak season for our Icebergers, with the annual John Locco Winter Swim Classic being held this Sunday in Brighton. And on the other side of the world our English Channel relay team are also due to swim this week.

Many of  our members and crews will be heading north to participate in the Queensland Regattas, Airlie Beach, Hamilton Island and Magnetic Island. Good luck to all competitors.

And finally if you’re looking for as fun night out don’t forget the RBYC film night “the World’s Greatest Showman” is coming up on Friday week.

However you choose to spend the winter months I look forward to seeing you at the club sometime soon.
