Did you listen to the weather forecast this morning? Do you have BOM on speed-dial? Do you look at the wind strength and direction at Fawkner Beacon or South Channel Island, or look at the waves and the sky, before casting off? Do you check the whiteboard in the gym corridor for sea temperature, or the EPA website for water quality before diving in for a swim? Or the prediction for rain before going for a walk? Whilst indoors, to me, the weather is of mild interest, but for engaging in the activities linked to our yacht club, it is crucial for our enjoyment, our racing tactics, and our safety.
On the top bar of our RBYC website there is a tab titled ‘Webcam and Weather’. This takes you to real time information, and to links to several weather forecast sites.
ORCV is running a three-evening course on weather fundamentals later in July, with more advanced courses for coastal and trans-ocean sailing also available.
Whatever the weather today, if you’re playing outside, grab a beanie.
And do whatever you can to moderate Climate Change.
