On the Field
Last Thursday night, Collingwood’s seven-match winning streak ended when they lost to Geelong at the MCG by 25 points. The win vaulted the Cats ahead of the Maggies on the ladder and up to seventh place. On Friday night, Fremantle broke away from the Western Bulldogs after halftime to win 11.12.78 to 5.11.41, allowing the Doggies only one major in the second half. The victory means the Dockers creep a little closer to their first minor premiership since 2015.
On Saturday afternoon, St Kilda hosted Sydney at Marvel Stadium. For the first three quarters, the Saints were up and about, pressuring the Swans into numerous errors and looking like they would claim their first big scalp for the season. Sadly for the Saints’ fans, the Swans lifted late in the third term, cutting their 24-point deficit in half by the final change and then racing away in the last quarter to win comfortably. Final score: Sydney 16.11.107 defeated St Kilda 13.10.88. At UTAS, Hawthorn consolidated third position on the ladder with a 14.15.99 to 12.11.83 victory over North Melbourne. GWS kept their chances of a top ten finish alive with a two-goal victory over the Power at the Adelaide Oval. The round’s biggest upset saw Carlton annihilate Brisbane by 76 points at the MCG on Saturday night. It was an emphatic display by the Blues and leaves them in tenth spot on the ladder. The loss dropped the defending premiers to fifth position on the ladder.
On Sunday, the Tigers fought hard to eke out an 11-point victory over West Coast at the MCG. It was the second time that Richmond has beaten the Eagles this season and the win lifts them off the bottom of the ladder, a game above Essendon. At the Gold Coast, the home team were hoping to finally end their long losing streak versus Melbourne. They had plenty of chances to do so, but bad skill errors at critical times let them down. For the Dees, this was a ‘must-win’ game if they were to remain in the top six, and they did just enough to win. Final score: Melbourne 18.6.114 defeated Gold Coast 16.9.105. In the final game, Adelaide thumped Essendon by 12 goals at Marvel Stadium. The win was a big percentage booster for the Crows, and moved them up to fourth place, three percentage points ahead of Brisbane, ten ahead of the Demons with all three teams currently on 52 points.
