Report from Rear Commodore Cath Hurley

There’s something for everyone at RBYC even in the depths of the Melbourne winter.

The winter solstice weekend was a busy one for the club with the Icebergers holding the annual solstice swim. Choppy but comparatively warm seas made for a lively swim.  Having recently returned from warmer climes I can recommend cold water swimming as an excellent strategy for getting over jetlag! One of the biggest challenges for many was finishing the massive parmas served on the night.

Your General Committee competed in the Frostbite regatta against Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron. We all sailed the Quest dinghies in the pond at Royal Melbourne, a challenge for predominantly keelboat sailors. While our youth team sailed well, Royal Melbourne won the adults trophy on the day, which is an ancient bottle of Yarra water.

The Blizzard series and ORCV race presented some challenging conditions on Saturday for those braving the wintery conditions.

In the clubhouse the restaurant has been opening early for soccer fans, serving egg and bacon rolls. Don’t forget the special lunch on Friday when Australia plays Paraguay at a more convenient time in Australia. Book a table for lunch and come and support the Socceroos at the club.

Remember to stay safe as the water continues to cool.

See you at the club soon.
