SAFETY
Boating requires a high degree of self-sufficiency. My non-sailing friends are incredulous that when trouble hits, one cannot just pull over and phone the on-water equivalent of the RACV Roadside Assist.
Thus, having a MOB (Man Over Board) protocol, and practising it, could be life-saving.
Likewise, having a boat that is sturdy, well-maintained, and fitted out appropriately, is wise. The Racing Rules of Sailing (aka ‘The Blue Book’) specifies compulsory requirements for boats doing different categories of racing. In addition, it is an excellent guide for checking that a boat is safely set up to be on the water even if not racing. Cruising along the west coast of Tasmania warrants more care than racing in RBYC Twilights.
Medical kits are a crucial component of being set up safely. In 2024 the medical kit requirements in the Blue Book were updated by Australian Sailing. They now specify kits appropriate for inshore, offshore, and ocean sailing. Do check yours is up-to-date. And, if you’re thinking of dropping the anchor and going for a bush walk, make sure you carry a snake bandage too.
Best wishes for Safe Sailing,
Marnie Irving, Club Captain.
