Commodores Report 8/7

Presentation Night
This is a reminder about our upcoming Presentation Night, where we will celebrate the achievements of our sailors over the past year. It will be an excellent opportunity to come together as a club and reflect on the hard work and success that has defined our season.

The event will feature the presentation of awards, alongside a lively social atmosphere. Why not come earlier to the Members’ Bar at 7:00 PM, where we’ll kick things off with the Friday night cash draw and a chance to win $1,000—but only if your name is drawn and you are present.

We look forward to recognising the dedication, courage and skill of our members. Please make sure to join us for what promises to be an enjoyable and memorable occasion.

We hope to see you there.

Friday 11th July at 7.00pm. Tickets $50pp, $30pp for juniors. Please book at RBYC Reception: 9592 3092. Please note, as this is a licensed premises an adult must accompany all members under 18 and vacate the club no later than 10pm.

Weekend Sailing at RBYC
RBYC sailors were active over the weekend, participating in various keelboat and OTB events. On Saturday, eight boats competed on the RBYC home course in the second race of the Costello/Blizzard Series. The race began in almost no wind but finished in 20–25 knots. Steven Fahey, Cartouche, took line honours, while Margie Neeson, Wild Child, Geoff Adams, True Colours, and Bruce Kremer Rock and Roll claimed victories in ORC, AMS, and ORC respectively. Congratulations to all the winners and competitors.

Earlier in the day, on the other side of the bay, 55 yachts lined up for the start of the ORCV 2025 DYSC Marine Supplies Winter Series destination race to Geelong. Among them were five RBYC yachts: Another Chapter, Bluewater Tracks, MEM, Sakima, and Serious Yahoo. Contrary to the forecast, the race began in very light winds and proved to be quite tactical before the northerly breeze strengthened to the forecast level. This was certainly true for Serious Yahoo, skippered by James Heywood, who favoured the right-hand side of the course (the western shore of Port Phillip). They finished the shortened race with a 1st on PHS and a 2nd on AMS. Congratulations to James and his crew!

After a relaxed evening enjoying the hospitality of the Royal Geelong Yacht Club, 17 yachts competed in the first DYSC Marine Supplies Winter Series Novice Skippers Race. Due to light winds in Corio Bay, the course was shortened, starting at Wilson Spit No. 11 and finishing at Point Richards No. 18. RBYC boats secured two spots on the podium, with Julie McKay, Another Chapter finishing 2nd and David Mileshkin, MEM placing 3rd. Congratulations to Julie and David!

Sunday OTB racing was cancelled due to a lack of wind.

Access to the RBYC Marina
In late June, the hardstand was inundated following a storm surge caused by a combination of strong westerly winds and a rising tide. As a result, the electric motor that operates the marina gate was damaged.

While we are obtaining quotes and exploring solutions to prevent a recurrence, access is currently only available via the pedestrian gate, which requires a key. Members who do not have a key can collect one from reception with a $100 credit card deposit, refundable upon return of the key.

In the meantime, we kindly ask members to remain vigilant about whom they allow through the gate. Under no circumstances should the gate be propped open, as occurred on Saturday morning. We are already facing challenges in restricting unauthorised access to the marina, and we appreciate your cooperation in not making it any easier.

Wishing you fair winds and following seas and remember no bananas at sea.
