RBYC Optimist on the Podium at Victorian Zhik Youth Sail – Charles Chidlow 2nd & Edward Jukes 3rd overall
The contingent of RBYC Optimist travelling to major regattas is continuing to grow as enthusiasm builds in Sundays RBYC Greenfleet as well as the Optimist holiday program at RBYC. Kids get your parents to sign you up and enjoy the fun.
Charlie Chidlow, Edward Jukes, Theo Altson and Alex Zhang headed down the coast to Sorrento Sailing Couta Boat Club for what could only be described as a four day kids sailing festival.
They commenced the week with a two day coaching program under the direction and instruction of some of the States best coaches. The in excess of 100 kids learned many new tricks and skills but most importantly had fun hanging out with all their sailing buddies on their holidays whilst meeting many new friends. There were many laughs, games and stories. The popularity of the event is enormous with many kids and families travelling from interstate to be part of it.
After the two training days they put their new found skills two the test in a two day regatta over the weekend in the Victorian Zhik Youth Regatta. Edward Jukes was straight out of the blocks with a first and a second in the first two races only to be worn down by his sailing buddy Charlie Chidlow over the remainder of the regatta with numerous podium race finished and capped off with a race win in the last race.
A great effort by the boys with Charile Chidlow finishing 2nd and Edward Jukes 3rd in the Greenfleet. A friendly rivalry definitely building between these two.
Theo Altson and Alex Zhang decided to step up and try their skills in the intermediate fleet and had some very solid results.
There is a building momentum in the Optimist Greenfleet at RBYC and we are looking to welcome many sailors who are completing Tackers 3 to graduate and take the next step into the Opti’s Greenfleet at RBYC.
