On the field: Round 1 is always tricky and we had five games this week. Carlton started well against the hometown Sydney Swans, leading by 10 points at halftime and quickly extending their lead to 22 points early in the third quarter. From that point, the Blues capitulated. Their 22-point advantage was quickly erased, and the Swans went on to win by 63 points. The Blues’ inability to play four quarters was reminiscent of last year’s poor performance. On Friday night, the Gold Coast Suns crushed last year’s runners-up, Geelong, with an impressive performance. The Cats were never in the hunt and lost by a whopping 56 points at Carrara.
On Saturday, the GWS Giants scored a comfortable victory over Hawthorn at Stadium Australia. The Hawks were slight favorites entering this game, but the home team had too much firepower and won 19.8.122 to 14.11.95. We finally saw a close game on Saturday night at The Gabba, where the defending premiers Brisbane failed to hold off a fast-finishing Western Bulldogs team that kicked 10 of the last 14 goals of the game. Final score: Bulldogs 16.15.111 defeated Lions 15.16.106.
The final game between St Kilda and Collingwood on Sunday night at the ‘G attracted a huge crowd. The Saints have acquired some high-profile players during the offseason and their supporters are expecting a much better season in 2026. In this game, however, the Magpies got on top in the second half and their defence held firm late to ensure Collingwood took the points – the final margin was 2 goals 11.12.78 to 9.12.66.

Congratulations to Jaci Tips and Derek Hanna both of whom tipped 5 winners. What an excellent start to the season! Jaci wins a $20.00 dining credit at the club by being closer on the margin game this week. Well done.
