It’s been a busy summer of sailing at Brighton and further afield. I’ve had the opportunity to sail with Brighton members at Geelong and at Sorrento in the Couta boat fleet. It’s been great to see how well our boats and crews perform when they compete with other clubs such as at the Geelong Festival of Sails Regatta. Most recently I was on a boat entered in the Lady Skippers Race at the Sorrento Sailing and Couta Boat Club. Unfortunately, we broke our rudder before the start so we didn’t sail, but it was great to be there to celebrate the success of club member Bronwyn McIlveen who took home first place in the second division. Bron has also just qualified as a regional race officer, so it’s been a big week for her.
The Port Phillip Women’s Championship Series is also underway, although the second race had to be postponed due to weather. It’s been one of those frustrating summers weatherwise! Our women’s sailing regatta Bliss is coming up in May, so have a think about female crew members who might be able to take the helm. We’ll also be offering some training for female sailors in the lead up so keep an eye out for those opportunities.
While I’m mentioning women on the water, the Queenscliff Maritime Museum is hosting a special Maritime Festival including an International Women’s Day Breakfast hosted by Hannie Rayson shining a spotlight on the contributions women make to the marine and maritime sectors. The poster is included in this weeks Newsletter. There’s lots going on at our club and around the bay.
See you at the club soon.
