On the field
Last Thursday night, the Bombers gave defending premiers Brisbane a scare, after rallying from an early four-goal deficit to hit the front early in the final term. The Lions weathered the storm and kicked the final three goals of the match to win 13.12.90 to 11.6.72. On Friday night, most of us expected to see a tough, close game between Collingwood-Hawthorn. Things turned out differently as the Magpies flexed their muscles in the second half to win comfortably by 51 points.
On Saturday, Fremantle travelled to the Gold Coast to face the Suns. Gold Coast fell behind early but got to the front early in the third quarter. It was an arm wrestle from there with the Dockers breaking away again, then withstanding a late Suns’ rally to win by eleven points. For the first three quarters of the Richmond-GWS game from Engie Stadium, the Tigers looked like they would cause a significant upset. However, they wilted in the final term as the Giants stormed home with 32 points to only one for Richmond. Final score: GWS 12.8.80 defeated Richmond 10.17.77. In the Saturday night game from the SCG, the Swans fell apart in their game versus Adelaide to lose by a whopping 90 points. Sydney coach Dean Cox lambasted his team afterward for their unacceptable performance.
On Sunday, Melbourne played St Kilda at Traeger Park in Alice Springs in a game that the Dees were favoured to win. Nobody told the Saints, who went on to record a 14.7.91 to 7.21.63 victory. That is a shocking kicking statistic for the Demons. In the final game at Perth Stadium, West Coast hosted Geelong. The Eagles kept the game close with their straight kicking until the final quarter, when the Cats put their feet on the accelerator and surged away to an emphatic 17.14.116 to 11.7.73 victory.
