RBYC and Brighton Sea Scouts Partner to Promote Recycling and Environmental Awareness

Royal Brighton Yacht Club and Brighton Sea Scouts Partner to Promote Recycling and Environmental Awareness
The Royal Brighton Yacht Club (RBYC) and the 1st/14th Brighton Sea Scouts have joined forces in a meaningful partnership aimed at raising environmental awareness and promoting recycling through the Victorian Container Deposit Scheme (CDS). This collaborative initiative not only encourages responsible waste disposal but also engages members and the local community in making a positive environmental impact with lasting benefits.
As the recent presentation by “Diver Dan” highlighted, our marine environment supports a rich diversity of fish, crustaceans, invertebrates, molluscs and bird life. The Club already has in place a number of programs to collect and recycle waste, reduce the use of soft plastics and minimise paper usage for major regattas. The partnership with the Sea Scouts aims to extend this to recyclable waste coming from boats in the marina and from the Club’s operations.
RBYC and 1st/14th Brighton Sea Scouts are leveraging the CDS scheme by collecting containers around the Club. The collected funds will support both youth development programs and environmental education initiatives, creating a dual benefit for the community and the environment.
This partnership highlights a shared commitment to sustainability and education. All that is required from boat owners is that they sort their rubbish and place only non-crushed eligible recycled containers in the clearly marked bins on the hardstand. The Sea Scouts, known for fostering leadership and outdoor skills, will take an active role in collecting and sorting recyclables, learning firsthand about the impact of pollution and the importance of conservation, while the Club sees this initiative as a natural extension of its stewardship of the marine environment.
Members of both organisations and the broader community are encouraged to participate by donating eligible containers at designated drop-off points. Together, the RBYC and Brighton Sea Scouts hope to inspire lasting behavioural change and demonstrate how small actions, like recycling a bottle or can, can contribute to a healthier planet.

Bins will be arriving on site in the near future.
