Over the Australia Day Long Weekend, I was visiting Paynesville on the beautiful Gippsland Lakes. It has often been called the boating capital of Victoria with 420km2 of navigable waterways, the largest in Australia. It was great to see 11 boats from Royal Brighton Yacht Club sailing in the Australian 2.4m Championships, in beautiful sailing conditions, with light to moderate breezes out of Gippsland Lakes Yacht Club. It is a place that all members should visit and explore, catch the Ferry to Raymond Island, visit Metung and Metung Yacht Club, Duck Arm, Barrier Landing, Ocean Grange, the Ninety Mile Beach, the Mitchell River Silt Jetties, and of course Paynesville for the annual Boat Rally. There are options for how to explore the wonderful waterways of the Gippsland Lakes, sailing your own yacht, hiring a Bulls Cruiser or charting a yacht from Riviera Nautic in Box’s Creek, Metung. Whichever way you decide, you will not be disappointed!
A great time to visit would be when the Paynesville Classic Boat Rally is on in late February 2026.
See you on the water.
