GC Report – Murray Cowdell

Before you know it, it will be the opening of the season and what a season it will be. Presently there are a number of members enjoying the warmth up north. From what I have heard there is plenty of wind also with some carnage. Read all about it and check out the results on the Airlie Beach Race Week website. It’s a bit different here, where we have started the winter series, with racing every second weekend for center course racing, with little success due to the lack of wind.

Talking of wind and forecasts I would remind members of the guest speaker we have this Friday evening for the cruising group dinner. Our guest speaker for the August 16th Guest Speaker Dinner will be Cheyne O’Brien from the Bureau of Meteorology. Cheyne is a marine specialist with the bureau, with a background in operational marine forecasting, and will present on forecasting and the science behind it, with an emphasis on the Port Phillip region, and the factors that influence the weather in the local area.

As usual, bookings are essential for catering purposes. To book, please contact Reception on 9592 3092 or email [email protected] prior to the close of business on Wednesday August 14th. $40.00 per person is payable on the night, inclusive of a two course dinner.

The Sailing Office is also preparing for the new season. Harry T has been serviced. Redeemer has been serviced and the equipment for racing is being checked. As part of this season, we have several major events. Sail Melbourne, Etchells Worlds with the pe-Worlds and Christmas Regatta beforehand, as well as other series and regattas coming up. Lots of opportunity to get out on the water!
