RBYC Car Show
On Sunday, the Club hosted the inaugural RBYC Car Show in support of club member Bryan Drummond and his friend of over 40 years Rudi Ota, who have entered the Spring Box Rally and in doing so raise funds for the Cancer Council. There were 54 cars from over the past 100 years on display and despite the weather; over 800 people visited the Club. Bryan and Rudi would like to thank everybody involved, including RBYC staff, the volunteers from across all areas of the Club, sponsors, North Brighton Rotary Club, and in particular all the Club members and public who kindly donated their cars and time on the day. In Bryan’s words, “I was impressed with the support Rudi and I have received from the Club, staff and volunteers.” Photos from the day can be viewed at:

The Shitbox Rally is not a race, rather an opportunity to drive cars worth just $1,500 across Australia via some of its most formidable roads in support of cancer research. Since its inception 15 years ago, the rallies have raised almost 60 million dollars for this worthwhile cause.
The rally will be around 4000km and over the seven days, Bryan and Rudy and 224 other teams will leave Alice Springs, head south to Yulara (Ayres Rock) and then on the Silverton, near Broken Hill in NSW, before heading north up to Bourke and then on the finish in Brisbane. Bryan and Rudi will tackle the route, including the infamous Oodnadatta Track, a gruelling 614km of unsealed road from Marla to Marree in South Australia, in a 2001 Honda Civic.
Personally, I’d like to thank the Car Show organising group, lead by Past Commodore Paul Woodman and his dedicated group of volunteers, the Yacht Club staff and everybody involved for their support of this event. The funds raised from this event, together with member contributions, amount to over $9,000. It is just another example of how our Club is becoming increasingly integrated into the local community and how members, and non-members, alike are contributing to its ongoing success.

Opening Day
Join us on Saturday 4 October as we celebrate the 151st Opening Day of the Royal Brighton Yacht Club, with the theme Sailing Past, Present and Future. The day begins at 11.30 with a special ceremony in the Members Bar and on the lawn, followed by the traditional Sail Past and a relaxed, fun race for those keen to get out on the water.
Back at the Club, members and guests can continue to celebrate in the Members’ Bar. A highlight of this year’s celebration will be the launch of our 150th Anniversary Book, a wonderful keepsake capturing the Club’s history and spirit. Also on display will be a striking exhibition of 12 painted Etchells’ jibs, created by local school students in honour of our 150th milestone.
Come along dressed in the Sailing Past, Present and Future theme, celebrate the season’s opening, purchase your copy of the book, and support our community’s young artists.
Wishing you fair winds and following seas and remember no bananas at sea.
