Our next Guest Speaker Dinner will be on Friday August 15th, when John & Jo Walker and Peter & Suzie Strain will let us into the secrets of Cruising the Houtman Abrolhos Islands – Australia’s historic and marine treasure. This promises to be a fascinating look at an historic, but lesser frequented, part of Australia’s coastline. Come and hear about small group expedition cruising on a large power catamaran exploring the Houtman Abrolhos Islands, location of shipwrecks and a vibrant fishing community, and snorkelling on Indian Ocean coral reefs.

As usual, after gathering in the Members Bar for the weekly announcements and members’ draw at 7:00pm, please join us in the Bayview Room for the dinner and talk.
Bookings are essential for catering purposes. To book, please contact Reception on 9592 3092 or email [email protected] prior to the close of business on Wednesday August 13th.   $40.00 per person is payable on the night, inclusive of a two-course dinner.

Apparently, a typical Abrolhos meal!

Banda Island

Meanwhile Rob Hurrell and his crew of Tony Garvey and Dave Stripp on “Aquacadabra” have arrived in Ambon, after the rally fleet spend time with a stopover in the Banda Islands. For history buffs, the dramatic Banda Islands were the centre of the battle to control the spice trade (primarily nutmeg) in 17th century, falling under Dutch control after a series of bloody confrontations. Interestingly, the British controlled one of the islands, a small one called Run, which they later swapped with the Dutch in 1667 for a swampy island in North America called New Amsterdam, now the site of New York – The Manhatten transfer.
