On the field – Round 3

In three of the games, Carlton, GWS, and Geelong all got off to blistering starts before ultimately losing their respective games. The Blues kicked the first four goals of their match versus the Bulldogs on Friday night before succumbing again when the Doggies ran over the top of them in the second half to win by 9 points. In Launceston, GWS used the wind well in the first term to open up a 33-point lead over Hawthorn. Remarkably, the Hawks bounced right back in the second quarter to hold a narrow halftime lead. The young Hawks went on with it in the second half to win by two goals. At the Gabba on Saturday night, the Lions looked down and out versus Geelong when they trailed by 32 points late in the second quarter. It was a significant deficit in what turned out to be a low-scoring game, but in the second-half, the defending premiers held the Cats to just two goals and staged a stirring rally to win 10.10.70 to 9.7.61.

In other games, the Bombers got their first win for the year. Essendon was full of running in the final term and emerged with a two-goal win over fancied Port Adelaide. On Saturday afternoon, Gold Coast piled on the points against a lacklustre Melbourne to win at the MCG by 58 points. St Kilda recorded a massive win over Richmond, defeating the Tiges by 82 points at Marvel Stadium. On Sunday, North travelled to Adelaide to play the Crows, hoping to continue their good form against the Dees from a week ago. For the first two and a half quarters, they showed plenty of Shinboner spirit. Adelaide kept edging away, helped by costly turnovers by the visitors, but the Roos would battle back. Finally, the Crows broke the game open and won by six goals. The ‘Derby’ match-up between Freo and WCE is always played with plenty of feeling. This particular game had even higher stakes as both teams were desperate to notch their first win of the season. The Dockers led by 26 points at the half and extended their lead to 38 points at the final siren.
