Cruising News 18/3

Our 2025 Guest Speaker Dinner program will kick off this coming Friday, March 21st, when Dan Lyon (aka “Diver Dan”) will let us into the secrets below the waterline with “Diver Dan’s Brighton Below the Sea”.

Dan, who does a great job keeping many of our boats slippery below the waterline, will focus his talk on the myriad of marine life that we’re fortunate enough to have on our doorstep here at RBYC. He will give some background on how he got into diving and his subsequent transition into day-to-day dive work. Dan will then discuss local ecological issues that he has observed in the performance of his work and the importance of keeping our little slice of paradise, “Brighton marina”, as clean as possible, along with the important part that each of us can play in keeping it beautiful and healthy for future generations.

Dan has an interesting set of photos and short videos of local marine life to show that includes seals, penguins, seahorses, octopus, rays, spawning fish, etc. This promises to be a fascinating evening.

As usual, bookings are essential for catering purposes. To book, please contact Reception on 9592 3092 or email [email protected] prior to the close of business on Wednesday March 19th.   $40.00 per person is payable on the night, inclusive of a two-course dinner.

In April, we are pleased to bring you Greg Clinnick, who will talk about Another Chapter’s 2024 Sydney to Hobart campaign. This Guest Speaker Dinner will be held on Friday 11th April and promises to be an informative and entertaining evening (this is a week earlier than usual, due to the usual “3rd Friday of the month” being Easter Good Friday).

Looking further out, The Cruising Group Committee has decided that in view of the proximity of Club’s 150th year ball to our previously scheduled May Guest Speaker Dinner, to defer that Dinner to June. Our Guest Speaker, John Rundell, has graciously agreed to delay a month to Friday June 20th to present on this year’s Wooden Boat Festival, along with Why Knot’s voyage down to Hobart to participate in the event.

In on-water matters, an overnight cruise to Docklands has been proposed for the weekend of April 12th/13th.  If you would be interested in participating, please drop a line to Tony Garvey  ([email protected]).
