Club Centre Course racing has finished for the season. One design fleets can look forward to the winter series commencing in August. Keelboat racing around the fixed marks certainly continues, both on a Wednesday and a Saturday (see the Club Calendar for all the sailing information and dates). Some of the volunteers will now get a small break from volunteering. Some may hope for a good ski season.
The volunteers willingly give up their time to help run yacht races. Why do we do this. Well, it beats mowing lawns, doing the washing or putting up with the neighbors for a day. Volunteers, along with the sailors, do get frustrated when the wind does not stay steady or just does not blow at all, and we are forced to cancel the race – especially if the wind comes in later in the day. These are always tough calls to make. Last Saturday was particularly challenging – I’m sure the competitors in the Apollo Bay Race would agree. On the plus side the still and sunny conditions have been perfect for lunch on the deck.
Around the Club, the building works for the forecourt redevelopment are well underway and it seems the traffic management plans that have be published are working well. Please see the diagram to refresh your memory if you have not been to the club for a while.
We are all looking forward to several future events. This weekend (Saturday) some of us will be attending the Australian Sailing summit which is being held at RBYC this year. Next week is the first of the SMART education evenings which are being held on June 5th & 19th , July 3 & 17. I can guarantee you will learn something. On June 8th, the Kings Birthday weekend, there is the Alan Robertson Trophy race to Queenscliff Cruising Yacht Club (QCYC).
Finally, and most importantly the Club is open for business – come and enjoy. It’s your club.
