Report from Rear Commodore Cath Hurley

There’s something for everyone at RBYC even in the depths of the Melbourne winter. The winter Solstice weekend was a busy one for the club with the Icebergers holding the annual solstice swim. Choppy but comparatively warm seas made for a lively swim. Having recently returned from warmer climes I can recommend cold water swimming as an excellent strategy for …

While club racers enjoyed the first of the aptly name Blizzard series last Saturday, Another Chapter and Serious Yahoo braved the first of the longer ORCV winter series races. To quote Another Chapter it was “Lumpy, bumpy and splashy…but fun.” Crews were certainly fully rugged up! Both boats performed well – see results here.

Frostbite Trophy goes to RMYS It was a glorious if light winter’s day for the Frostbite regatta. This is an annual event between General committee members of Royal Brighton Yacht Club and the Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron racing in Quest dinghies. The RBYC youth team performed very well but unfortunately their scores didn’t count. Royal Melbourne won the adults racing and took home the famous trophy which consists of an ancient bottle of Yarra water. Thanks to the squadron for hosting and for the delicious BBQ.

Attenuator Repairs underway
Following considerable assessment and planning, Elstone Diving Services has been engaged to undertake re-sleeving of the most severely damaged piles on the attenuator. The weather this week is perfect for this work. There has been considerable effort put in by the Marina and Attenuator Advisory Panel to determine the best way forward while continuing to move towards a permanent replacement.

Week 15 On the Field Ladder leaders, Fremantle recorded a 9-point victory over Geelong at Perth Stadium last Thursday night. It was an impressive victory over a quality opponent. Freo were a bit slow to get going after having the bye last week - they trailed by 22 points in the second quarter. They hit their stride in the second half to win …

A perspective from Past Commodore Ron Davies
Congratulations to the successful participants in the 2016 Kings Cup regatta in the fourteenth year of Optis sailing at Royal Brighton.
Optis came to RBYC in 2012 with six donated boats, the club Opti fleet is now 12 boats and the entry list of 55 boats for the 2026 Kings Cup regatta indicates the strength of the growth of the class which should continue for some years to come.
Well before then, back in 1962,some mature age senior members got the idea of sailing sabots on around the Brighton harbour on Sunday mornings in winter, after summer yacht racing had ceased for the winter period, when restoring the timber keel boats required being pulled out for repair and maintenance and painting, now a thing of the past. Sunday sabot sailing commenced.
However, fifty years on, in 2011, a group of club members considered that it was time to move to a more modern boat. After discussions at Australian Yachting level the plastic Ozi Opti was considered appropriate and a steering group was formed which collected donations from a number of club members to fund the purchase of six Optis and materials for two boat trolleys each to carry three Optis.
In February 2012 a christening was held on the beach for the six new Optis. It took some time for the committee at the time to accept the Optis as a replacement for the Sabots. However, the Optis were finally accepted by the club and became an official club training class.
The wonderful Tackers style program was adopted which provided a well structured training method which very gently introduced youngsters to sailing in the safe protected waters of the Brighton harbour.
Over the years the structure of the Opti training program has been extremely well developed to the quite sophisticated program it is today and likely to continue for many years, introducing young people to the wonderful sport of sailing, and in particular, yacht racing.

ORCV KISS (Keelboat Introduction to Sailing Savvy) 2026
The training program is in full swing with only 6 weeks to go to the final event, the RBYC to QCYC Passage Rally, where our women will test out their new found skills in lead roles of helm, navigator and radio operator and Boat Team Managers lead the logistics.
Since 15 April with our first session meeting at RBYC, our 43 women have been through a series of online knowledge webinars along with building their on-water skills under the watchful eyes of their boat owners and mentors.
On Sunday 14 June, the 8-week mark, all 11 boat teams gathered together at Elwood Sailing Club with our women jumping into a full day Safety Workshop, putting their shoulders to the wheel, rotating through rules of the road, lifejacket servicing, VHF practical and MOB drills and equipment. Throughout the day, home made soups and vittles provided by the KISS committee ensured performance stamina and hydration for the duration. A sea of grinning sailors left the venue buoyed with confidence and seeking more on-water time to progress their sailing.
Thanks to RBYC Commodore Peter Demura for engaging keelboat club commodores in providing donations from their members of pre-loved wet weather gear. Thanks to RYCV, HBYC, RBYC and SYC for their donations for a silent auction which raised over $1000 for the program and put a smile on the dial of many women as they dived into their new gear.
Now only 6 weeks out, with remaining webinars of Passage Planning and Passage Rally Briefing to go and increasing on-water training activity, RBYC will support and provide the rally start on Saturday 1 August to destination club QCYC for an overnight celebration, presentation and graduation from the KISS program.
Good luck to all our crews for their epic journeys ahead. Rosie Colahan
