Message from our Commodore

First, I want to acknowledge the many groups of people who have contributed to RBYC over the past year to help make the club what it is. • To all the sailors competing over the next month, whether that be ocean racing, bay racing or …

Social Committee dinner

The Social Committee of RBYC had an end of year celebration with a difference at the Kelvin Club in the centre of Melbourne. It’s one of our many reciprocal clubs that we as members have the chance to use.
The staff made us very welcome with drinks in leather armchairs in the downstairs bar followed by dinner in the large dining/ballroom upstairs.
One of the highlights was the staff whose talents included playing popular tunes on the piano that we sang along to. A great night was had by all.

Footy Tipping

I'm sending a note to wish everyone season's greetings and all the best for 2024. Thanks again for your participation in our RBYC footy tipping competition and I hope you'll be back again to have a go next season. I enjoy organizing tipping competitions and am busy at the moment with an NFL tipping competition - if any of you fancy having a crack at NFL tipping, please let me know and I'll include you for next season.

Best to everyone.

Marine Rescue

Vanessa Twigg and James Heywood came across a fairy penguin on Saturday – in Vanessa’s words…
“We were walking along the walkway and saw it near there and it was swimming but not very well. When we walked back along it was still there resting against a mooring line looking very tired and it was small. James picked it up out of the water and we put it in a box - it was standing up by that time so no obvious injuries. We rang wildlife rescue Victoria who put us on to the rescue for marine life. The vets at the zoo look after penguins so we were told to take it there. They just thought it was young and got a bit lost. It was their second one for the day.”
Unfortunately, these penguins often don’t survive the experience, but it is worth knowing about the Melbourne Zoo Marine Rescue who deal with marine rescue of penguins, seals and dolphins. They have recently received a number of juvenile penguins who have fledged but then don’t thrive. They want people to rescue them so that they are not eaten by dogs or other predators.
