General News

Hello Members
Looking back at the last few General Committee weekly updates, we have been reminded that the cold weather is really upon us; however, it is pleasing to see that many events are still happening around the club, both on and off the water.
We had the Frostbite Cruise up to Melbourne City Marina; the weekend just passed. This event now runs in conjunction with the City of Melbourne’s Firelight Festival. It was great to see a mixture of sail and power boats participate. Each boat had slightly different plans for the weekend, but seeing new participants and getting members together in the Marina was fantastic.
The cruisers headed for New Caledonia have reached their destinations safely and are now enjoying cruising around the islands, including Iles des Pins and the Loyalty Islands. Most will soon look to head across to Vanuatu and then back to Australia in September.
Out on the marina, there is plenty of evidence of rakali or native water rat activity; the most obvious is empty mussel shells on the walkway and arms. I have recently heard stories from boat owners about rakali getting into boats and creating havoc. As a fellow boat owner, I wanted to remind all owners to watch for possible activity and access points to your boat interior.
Have a great week ahead!

New training boat ready for clients

The recently purchased X79 keel boat went for her test sail on Monday with Commodore (Niesje Hees) and Glenn Ferguson. The boat performed beautifully and all sails were tested. (including the spinnaker with only the 3 crew) and it was agreed that it will be a great platform for training. Our first course is booked out and it's winter so we expect a busy summer training season with her. A special shout out to Paul Jackson & Glenn Ferguson helping get her ready and Janet Wilksie from Wilksie Marine for the new rigging and installing the mast.

he bye rounds are now behind us and we returned to a full slate of 9 games this week. There was a mixture of very close games and very lopsided results.
On the field: on Thursday night, the Brisbane Lions flexed their muscles when they trounced Richmond by a whopping 81 points at The Gabba. Friday night's game was quite the opposite, with Sydney and Geelong playing a draw at the SCG. On Saturday, Adelaide defeated North Melbourne by eleven goals, Collingwood did even better in beating the Gold Coast by thirteen goals and the Bulldogs finally had their kicking boots on... their accurate kicking of 16.6 saw them account for visiting Fremantle at Marvel Stadium by 29 points
