Cerberus Trophy Review

Cerberus Trophy Review
Early in the week the forecast was for wet cold conditions, and predictions were that the post-race barbecue would be in the members bar. 13 boats discovered how fickle Melbourne’s weather can be. The sun shone, there was a light 6-10 knot breeze allowing all boats to finish, and it was perfect for the barbecue on the hard stand. The …

Hi all,

On the field: a really exciting game this week was the GWS vs. Sydney 'Battle of the Bridge' at the SCG on Saturday afternoon. After being thrashed a week ago, everyone expected Sydney to bounce back strongly this week and they certainly did so. GWS matches up well against the Swans, and the Giants were up for the fight. Accurate kicking had them leading this game for long periods of time but the Swans got on top in the third and by early in the final term, were ahead by more than 20 points. GWS then stunned the Swans by kicking the game's last four goals to snatch a one-point victory. The Giants' Toby Greene (who has done many stupid things during his career) showed his talent by kicking the final goal from a throw-in with less than a minute to play. Another close game was the Friday night match between St Kilda and visiting Port Adelaide. The Power have had the wood on the Saints for the last few years (winning 12 of 13) and the trend continued this week. The Saints were certainly not disgraced as they played a solid game themselves. On end coming off only a 5-day break may have been the determining factor in their narrow 7-point loss - that and the brilliant play of young Port Adelaide star Jason Horne-Francis (the number one pick by North Melbourne in the 2021 AFL draft).

The AFL may be a bit concerned with the lopsided results in some of the other games. Melbourne trounced North Melbourne by 90 points on Saturday night while Carlton recorded a 108-point victory over a badly depleted West Coast Eagles team at Perth Stadium. It was the first time since 2014 that the Blues have won a game by more than 10 goals. Brisbane was never threatened in their game, rolling to an 8-goal win over visiting Freo while Geelong maintained their ominous form of recent weeks kicking the first 38 points of their game versus Essendon. To their credit, the Bombers fought back but were never going to bridge the gap. The Gold Coast Suns recorded a terrific four-goal win over Richmond at Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Their young side is improving, and they held Richmond to only 6 goals for the entire game.

The Western Bulldogs made sure that Marcus Bontempelli's 200th match was a winning one - Hawthorn kept the game close for the first half but the Doggies moved ahead in the second half to run out winners by 29 points. In the late game, Collingwood provided us with another thriller, rallying from 16 points down at the final change to record a memorable one-point victory over hometown Adelaide. The Crows will be kicking themselves very hard after squandering numerous chances to put the game away in the first three quarters - their terrible kicking for goal really came back to haunt them.

Tipping: there were a number of upsets this week and only a few tipsters were brave enough to tip Port Adelaide, GWS and Gold Coast. Unsurprisingly, nobody managed a perfect score. Congratulations to our top tipsters, Greg Hayes (ESPN Fan), Peter G 66, Andy Mul, and Bondy07 who all managed 7 winners - a great score. Collingwood's late comeback win over Adelaide denied our tipping leader the Grumpy Swimmer from stretching his overall lead to 5 points... he still leads comfortably by 3.
