Sailing Championship League Final
|
|
|
Over the weekend RBYC competed in the 2023 Sailing Champions League at RPAYC. Our team of Thomas Holmes (Skipper),Laura Thompson, Anna Cripsey and Phillip Cripsey travel to NSW after winning the right to compete in this after their success at VIC finals at the Festival of Sails. The competition, from around the country ,was tough and in the words of Laura " We struggled a little keeping up with some of the teams who sail together all the time" but they did the club proud, with respectable finish but also as importantly showed off RBYC at its best.

Commodores Challenge - SYC
|

On Sunday 28th, SYC are holding the Commodores Challenge. Part of their Women in Sailing this is a race between clubs on the bay nominating a team of 5 females to represent their clubs. RBYC , who has had success in the past, is entering the team of Chloe Fisher (Skipper), Eliza Ewart, Alex McDonald, Lallie Leckey & Charlotte Wormald. We wish them all the best.

Three teams adopted 'in language' club names for the Doug Nicholls round which is spread over Weeks 10 & 11. Fremantle adopted the name 'Wallayup,' Melbourne adopted 'Narrm' and Port Adelaide adopted 'Yartapuulti' - just for the indigenous round. All 18 teams wore/will wear a special indigenous round 'strip' to mark the occasion.

On the field: there were a few very close games this week. Port Adelaide (Yartapuulti) narrowly defeated Melbourne (Narrm) by 4 points on Friday night. This game had numerous lead changes before Connor Rozee kicked a late goal to get the Power over the line. It was Port's seventh straight win. Essendon scored a dramatic come-from-behind one-point win over Richmond to win their first Dreamtime game in a decade. The Tigers had a slight lead for most of the second half. Still, the Bombers kept at it and were ultimately rewarded after a mark and set shot with 7 seconds left (Richmond's Rhyan Mansell missed everything from a set shot with 3 minutes left - a blunder that loomed large in the final result). Sydney barely defeated lowly North Melbourne, 93-90 and only then under controversial circumstances. With North ahead by 3 points and under a minute to play, the Kangaroos were penalized for an interchange infringement, which gifted the Swans the go-ahead goal from point-blank range. Sydney broke a four-game losing streak with the win.

The Western Bulldogs played Adelaide in Ballarat on Saturday and struggled to find the 'big sticks.' Normally a team will be punished for kicking 11-19, but their opposition was far worse and the Crows managed only 5 goals for the entire game - the Bulldogs won by 45 points. Freo was at home this week and played exciting footy against last year's premier Geelong to comfortably win by 29 points. In Queensland's 'Q Clash' Brisbane easily accounted for the Gold Coast by 43 points.

In the Sunday games, Hawthorn won the battle of the cellar dwellers vs West Coast by an astonishing margin of 116 points. WCE has had numerous injuries this season but this loss to a team that has also been struggling is embarrassing. Football's biggest rivalry between Carlton-Collingwood continued at the MCG on Sunday. The Magpies quickly gained ascendancy during the first quarter (kicking 5 goals to 1) and cruised to victory. For the massive crowd (80,000) hoping to see a good contest, this game didn't deliver. Collingwood converts their opportunities better, use the corridor better and is playing far more confidently than Carlton. The game plan for the Blues really needs to be revamped. In the late game, GWS hosted St Kilda at Giants' stadium. The Sainters needed to stand up after losing three of their previous 5 games. They had Max King back in the line-up to give them a target up forward but were made to work very hard to get the 4 points... the Saints prevailed by 2 goals.

Tipping: scores ranged between 3-9 this week. Big congratulations to Andrew0711 and Lynchey both of whom tipped a perfect round 9/9 (both are keen Essendon supporters and were elated with the Bombers' last-gasp victory). What a top effort on a tricky week that featured a number of very close games. Andrew wins the $20.00 dining credit at the club for being closer on the margin game than Lynchey. Our leaderboard remains tightly bunched and the Grumpy Swimmer still has his nose in front.
