2022 RBYC AFL Tipping Competition

Hi everyone,

I've just returned from the RBYC where about 90 of us participated in this year's Winter Solstice Swim followed by a delicious curry dinner in the Members' Lounge afterward. So good to see lots of people back and enjoying our great club facilities this evening.

On the field: both St Kilda and Carlton copped a reality check this round. In a major upset, Essendon defeated St Kilda by 35 points on Friday night. This was a game that the Saints were expected to win but instead, the loss has pushed them back to 8th place on the ladder and in danger of dropping out of the 8. Similarly, Richmond was easily the better team on Thursday night handling the wet, slippery conditions well and slamming on the first 6 goals of the game before Carlton could register their first major mid-way through the second term. The Tiges were never headed. The Blues had been favored going into this game but it wasn't to be and they clearly have a lot of work to do even to make the finals this year. The competition is so close that any of the teams down to 12th position could still make the 8 by the end of the home-away rounds. The premiership race is wide open and so too is the race to make the final 8 (this is something the AFL has been striving for, for many years and this season we seem to genuinely have a really close competition).

The Eagles were much more competitive this week but ultimately lost to Geelong at home by 3 goals - the win has pushed the Cats up to fourth place on the ladder. Port Adelaide overcame a number of injuries to defeat visiting Sydney by 23 points and keep their finals hopes alive. Last year's runners-up the Western Bulldogs won an important game over arch-rivals GWS at Giants' stadium on Saturday night. After a tight first half, the Bulldogs came out firing in the third quarter, kicking 6 goals to 2 to set up their 20-point victory. This was the highest-scoring game played this season with both teams scoring over 100 points (sadly, something that doesn't happen too often in modern footy). In today's late game, the improving Gold Coast Suns were too good for the visiting Adelaide Crows and recorded a 43-point win.

Tipping: as there were some upsets this week, nobody managed a perfect score. Congratulations to Romney J, Annabanana, Weazr1, Nicholaci, and Lynchey, all of whom managed 5/6 this week. Very well done. Kylie1004 continues to hold her 1-point lead at the top. Here is our leaderboard.

Please get your tips in for Round 15 soon - first game will be this Thursday night with Melbourne hosting the Brisbane Lions in a top of the table clash at the MCG.
