Dear Members, As another summer sailing season nears its end, it was pleasing to see increased keelboat participation, particularly on Wednesdays in the Twilight races. We saw strong participation in many classes in regattas held around the bay and interstate throughout the season. During the Half Yearly AGM, I presented our Club Captains report, highlighting other positive improvements in participation with …

Sailing Sign On
As well as a safety measure, the sign on system provides the Race Officer of the day with useful information as to how many boats might be sailing, what classes, etc. This not only helps in determining race layouts with length of start lines but on days of marginal conditions it assists the Race Officer in determining whether or not …

In 2020, Christiaan de Beukelaur spent much of the year at sea, aboard the century old schooner Avontuur, carting cargo across the Atlantic. The Avontuur set sail from Elsfleth, Germany, to show that wind propulsion offers an alternative to heavily polluting cargo ships. Christiaan’s voyage was meant to be a three-week stint of fieldwork. He wanted to find out if it’s really as …

It looks like the AFL is on a winner, establishing an extra round this season, with all games being played in South Australia. Most of the games were played at the Adelaide Oval, three at Norwood Oval and one up in the Adelaide Hills - capacity or close-to-capacity crowds attended every game. Having the Gather Round played in the City of Churches has reportedly resulted in a financial windfall exceeding $80 million for the state of South Australia. Adelaide will host this round again for the next three seasons, at least.

On the field: Carlton and the Western Bulldogs might consider themselves a bit unlucky to be facing the 2 SA teams on their home ground while all the other teams were playing each other on neutral territory. The Crows put on an absolute clinic in the opening game, crushing the Blues by 56 points. Adelaide started and finished the game very strongly - the match was effectively over by quarter-time after the Crows kicked eight goals to 2. The Saturday night game between Port Adelaide and the Bulldogs was a see-saw affair with a number of lead changes. The Doggies led into the final quarter, but the home team finished stronger, kicking the final four goals to emerge with a 14-point victory. In another close game, the Fremantle Dockers rallied late to defeat the Gold Coast Suns by 10 points. At Norwood Oval on Sunday afternoon, the Giants rallied in the final term to just edge the Hawks by 2 points. This match was riddled with mistakes before a huge mark by Harry Himmelberg led to the winning goal with just over 2 minutes to play.

The round's biggest upset saw Essendon take down 'premiership favorites' Melbourne by 27 points. It was an impressive performance by the Bombers. With the Dees suffering their second loss in only five games this season, the notion amongst some pundits that the premiers from 2 years ago are 'favorites' again this season seems a bit fanciful.
The lopsided games saw Brisbane crush North Melbourne by 75 points, Sydney bounced back this week to beat Richmond by 44 points and Geelong did as they wished on Sunday afternoon to account for the Eagles by 47 points.
In the late game, St Kilda dropped their first game of the year... narrowly by 6 points to Collingwood. After a tight first half, the Magpies had the better of the second half and led comfortably by 25 points deep into time-on in the final quarter. To their credit, the Saints did not give up and rallied late to make the scoreline close.

Reminders: please remember to place your tips! The Thursday night games have finished for the time being. The Fremantle Dockers host the Western Bulldogs this coming Friday night at Optus Stadium to start Round 6. Also, another reminder to please include a margin when you tip the first listed game of each round - I notice that a number of tipsters are still forgetting to do this. Our position on the tipping ladder is determined by the number of total tips and in the event of multiple tipsters on the same score, your position on the ladder is determined by how low your cumulative margin is. I have listed the cumulative margin for the first few tipsters above so that you understand what I am talking about!
