Volunteering in sailing can give you some amazing experiences.
Over the holiday season I had the chance to volunteer for the 50th Melbourne to Hobart and also Sail Melbourne at Royal Brighton Yacht Club. Both were so rewarding in many ways.
I was able to assist The Ocean Racing Club of Victoria with media coverage of the 50th Melbourne to Hobart and in welcoming the boats when they arrived in Hobart. It was so exciting to be part of such an iconic event and experience the joy that competitors feel when they finish the race. Hobart made the yachties from both the Melbourne and the Sydney to Hobart boats very welcome and there was an atmosphere of celebration in the air.

Sail Melbourne Wrap up

Competitors, volunteers and Australian Sailing considered this to be a highly successful and enjoyable event. You can see some terrific video and photos on the Sail Melbourne Facebook page. Volunteers commented on the camaraderie between clubs and across race management teams.

As special shout out to the beach volunteers who put in a massive effort in hot/cold and challenging conditions . This great team of people was lead by our very own Commodore Niejse Hees who was seen many a time hauling trailers up the beach, not something you often see a Commodore doing, so please when you see her say thank you
“To the RBYC beach volunteers, I want to thank you hugely for all the help and dedication you displayed over Sail Melbourne. For an old sailor like me, the help with my Laser was enormous. The smiles and encouragement each day was uplifting. The club can be very proud of putting on a great regatta. I’m not sure who they were, but the pin boat team got to know me well also! Thank you again.” Nick Ede, Laser 220000.
