Course Overview
OutThere Sailing 1 is an opportunity for 12 – 17 year olds who are looking to try something new. It’s a great way to experience sailing while having fun with friends for those who have never sailed before or only have limited experience. By the end of OutThere 1, you will gain a grasp of the basics (eg. steering, controlling the sail and capsizing)
Course Prerequisites
- Water confident
- 12-17 years old
Who should do this course?
This course is designed for participants who wish to be introduced to the sport of sailing. It’s an ideal course to learn the basics in a fun, safe and social environment,
Course Outcome
You will gain your OutThere 1 completion certificate once you have mastered the following curriculum
- Know correct clothing and equipment
- Rig the boat (with some help!)
- Name all parts of the boat
- Understand how tide works
- Tie a figure of 8 and reef knot
- Launch and return with assistance
- Assisted capsize
- Points of sail and appropriate trim
- Trim jib correctly when prompted
- Learn about the 5 essentials
- Tack correctly (light – moderate)
- Come alongside RIB on a reach
- Understand man overboard procedure
- Learn keep clear & port/starboard
