How a course is shortened
There was some confusion last Saturday when the keelboat Division 2 race was shortened. Rule 32.2 describes how it works:
".... the finishing line shall be, (a) at a rounding mark, between the mark and a staff displaying flag S; (b) a line the course requires boats to cross; or (c) at a gate, between the gate marks. "
So on Saturday the RO in the Tower displayed Code flag S, made two sound signals and also made a call over the radio as the first boat rounded number 5 mark. So the finish was then as soon as the hull of your boat crossed the line between the Tower and number 6 mark.

OTB Update Thirteen RBYC sailors represented the club at the Victorian State Championships over the weekend.
With 110 boats, the competition was HOT - almost to a national championship standard. Top interstate and overseas competitors attended the event as a warm up to Sail Melbourne. Conditions were challenging with significant wind shifts and black flags.
RBYC sailors achieved some excellent results including: Matt Blakey - ILCA 7, 1st Apprentice & 3rd overall (beating Brett Beyer, a 13-time masters world champion) Tom Holmes - ILCA 7, 3rd under 21 & 8th overall (an outstanding effort!) Owen McMahon - ILCA 6, 2nd Master (pipped on countback) Brendon Jukes - ILCA 6, 3rd Master Nick Ede - ILCA 6, 3rd Grand Master Tony McPhail - ILCA 6, 2nd Great Grand Master Plus strong performances from seven other RBYC members.
The ILCA horde will descend on RBYC this week as we host Sail Melbourne.
