Where were you when Australia II won the America’s Cup on 26 Sept 1983?
Those of you in the members bar on Friday night would have enjoyed the terrific presentation by Greg Wallace celebrating the 40th anniversary of the America’s Cup win.(see article below).
We’ll have another opportunity to commemorate the win at Opening Day on 7 October. In the meantime, we asked people the question “Where were you when Australia II won the America’s Cup?” and received some terrific responses.
Wendy Luck (Past Commodore) – I remember everyone at the Yacht Club celebrating the next day – I recall lots of tired people there!
Greg Wallace (Chair of the Iceberger sub-committee) - I was in my first year at Monash University, I watched the race at home, went to uni so excited draped in the Australian flag, went to my first class - stats - then headed to the Notting Hill Hotel where I spent the day celebrating

News From Club Captain

My name is Marnie Irving, and as of the AGM last week, I have taken over from Brett Heath as Club Captain at RBYC. My sailing interest began via my kids; cooking sausages for the sabot sailors, carrying 12 foot cadets over the sand from the Jock Sturrock centre, and then tending bruises to a kid falling off 29ers.It segued …

Twilight Sailing Starts October 11th

When the clocks go forward it's time for Summer evening Sailing. This is always a great time on and off the water, and for those that are looking for a more social and relaxed style of sailing then this is for you. We have had a number of new yachts arrive over winter and I suggest that trying out twilight sailing is a must. It's a great way to get on the water with friends and family and enjoy your boats (and you never know you might pick up a prize on the day) There is a Pre and Post Christmas Series, Fleet racing at 6pm (with Spinnakers ) then from 6.15 pm its white sails pursuit start and the trophy is well contested. It's also a great way for the club to show itself off to potential new members so if you have spots for SailPass people then please let the sailing office know.
The restaurant will be taking orders up to 9pm so bring your crew in after racing and continue the fun.

America's Cup Win Celebration in Members Bar

If you have not already heard on the grapevine, on the Friday just gone the social committee decorated the members bar in recognition of Australia II winning the America's Cup 40 years ago.
The bar was splendid in Green and Gold with boxing kangaroos and aussie flags , leaving no one in doubt of what was being recognised that evening.
Greg Wallace ( iceberger) presented and amazing presentation in brilliant detail, with the race on the big screen. He proposed a toast to the winning team and we even had a message from John Bertram (winning skipper) which added a lovely touch to the night.
The nostalgia and how much winning the race means still today. There were only a few dry eyes in the room.
It was a tremendous evening. Thank you to those that came.
