Rear commodore
Dear Members
I am looking forward to seeing our Wednesday and Saturday program swing into full gear now that the summer holidays are over and we see our boats return to the club. The weather continues to provide some hits and misses. Last weekend’s back to sailing launch was hampered by poor weather, but we appear to have some lovely sailing days on the horizon.
Our monthly Guest Speaker Dinners, bought to you by the Cruising Group, kick off again in February. This month we have Robina and Brenton Smith talking about their trip ‘Beyond the Barrier’ during their recent travels north. Other upcoming speakers include author Christiaan de Beukelaer on his book “Trade Winds”, A Voyage to a Sustainable Future for Shipping. Wayne Seaward and crew of Cyan Moon presenting on their recent Rolex Sydney to Hobart race success. Keep an eye out for dates and topics on the third Friday of each month, bookings can be made via Mandy at Reception.
In my previous message, I extended an open invitation to all power boat owners to join any Cruising Group events. We have one power boat interested in participating in the Bass Strait Cruise, and another actively cruising down in Tasmania. All our on-water events are open to all types of boats, not just sail, so please consider joining the group for our next on-water event.
We are also actively looking for power boat owners to help in volunteering by either assisting in driving the support boats or using your own boat as an on-water support vessel. This is a great way to practice and improve your boat handling skills and an opportunity to get up close to some excellent sail racing. Please contact the Sailing Office if you are interested in helping.
Have a great week ahead!

Quest Experience

This year we are offering a TRAINING DAY for competitors ahead of the regatta, in the Club’s Quest sailing dinghies for a nominal fee. This is made possible with the generous support of the Yacht Racing Services Association (YRSA).
Keelboat sailors often say that the best way to hone your skills is in a one design dinghy.
This hands-on opportunity puts theory into practice.
Improve your sailing confidence as well as race tactics.

An accrediated Australian Sailing course, experienced offshore sailors and trainers take you through online the theory content and then join you for the in-person day to complete the theory, review and practical sessions. Melbourne to King Island - Friday March 10th
This popular destination race provides crews the opportunity to experience category 2 ocean racing over 114nm. It's a special destination with amazing food, hospitality, and a deep safe harbour. Entries will be capped due to berthing and can be entered here https://www.orcv.org.au/sailing/races/king-island
ORCV Rip Tour of Port Phillip Heads - Sunday March 19th
“The Rip” is the narrow entrance to Port Phillip, where underwater reefs limit the navigable entrance to just 0.6nm and provides a restricted tidal flow between the ocean and Port Phillip, where over 4,000 commercial vessels transit annually.
Once a year, the ORCV runs an on-water tour from a large ferry looking at the navigation aids, tides, how to and which channels to use, radio protocols etc for a safe transit of the heads.
The tour runs inside the bay but travels around the head's region and offers not only an educational experience but a great day on the water.
