Victorian Bushfires
There have been terrible losses suffered by several Victorian communities during the recent and ongoing bushfires and we are deeply sorry for what they are experiencing. Many of us have friends and family directly or indirectly affected. We also acknowledge the great work of emergency services and front line workers in extremely difficult circumstances.

Why did my Pursuit Time Change?

Article by Paul Pascoe (IJ/NRO). While most people have a view that their pursuit start time only changes based on their performance in the previous race, there are a number of other reasons it may change from week to week. While it is reasonable to expect that leading boats from a race are given a later start time the following week, and the back markers are more favorable start time, this is not the only reason...read more

RBYC wins Stonehaven Cup 2026
Between the 5th and 10th of January RBYC hosted the 96th Stonehaven Cup. This annual regatta is a chance for youth sailors from around Australia to compete against each other in RS Quest dinghies. The event has a long history starting off in 12 foot Cadet dinghies. This year 26 boats were involved and the teams were from Australian Navy Cadets, Lake Ginninderra Sea Scouts, King Island Boating Club, Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron and Royal Brighton Yacht Club. With 78 sailors and over 30 support personal there was a great buzz at the club. Unfortunately the Melbourne weather was not playing ball and due to extreme temperatures and strong winds we were only able to get in 5 races. RBYC was able to take both the Otto Miek team trophy and the Stonehaven Cup.

Etchells Australasian Championships 8-11 January – 7 terrific races over 2 days
Five RBYC boats made the trip to Geelong for the regatta (1478 Triad 2020 - John Bertrand, 1466 Tango - Chris Hampton, 1399 That’s Life - Ian Crisp, 1444 Playing Around 3 - Peter Robson and 1141 Men’s Shirts Short Skirts - Peter Stubbings). Due to a couple of days of gale force winds there were only two sailing days, but the Race Committee did a great job in getting 7 races in. The article on the Etchells Website has links to some terrific video footage and photos by Nic Douglass.
There is lots of Etchells racing to look forward to with the East Gippsland Regatta in Metung over the January long weekend, and the Victoria State Titles coming to RBYC from 13-15 March. Chris Hampton will be travelling to San Diego for the 2026 World Championship in May.
J24 Australian Championship 9-10 January
Nick Chapman (5058 Wildfire) sailed in the blustery J24 Australian Championship at Sandringham Yacht Club, which was also able to sail only two of the scheduled four days, still getting six races in. The terrific photo is by Russell Bates.
