Report from Rear Commodore

One of the joys of belonging to RBYC is heading off to regattas with fellow sailors. You get to hone your skills and teamwork over an extended period of time with a full week of racing. RBYC boats at ORCV winter series - by GC Member Greg Clinnick.

Last weekend saw three RBYC keel boats competing in the final race in the ORCV's DYSC Marine Supplies Winter Series. With fleets averaging in excess of 40 boats across the series, this is arguably some of the best keel boat racing on the bay. Saturdays race was a 35 nautical mile destination race to Blairgowrie.
Westerly winds of 15 to 20 knots made for a fast reach to the first mark off Mornington and then a tactical beat up the channel to the Blairgowrie yacht club.
In Div 1 AMS Another Chapter came 2nd, Cartouche 5th and Serious Yahoo 12th. Cartouche finished 4th in PHS and Another Chapter finished 7th which was enough for her to take out the overall series on PHS and come 4th overall in AMS.
On Sunday there was a novice skipper's race back towards SYC. Over the shortened course Julie McKay on Another Chapter claimed 3rd place with Cartouche 4th and Serious Yahoo 6th.
A fantastic weekend of racing and socialising at Blairgowrie Yacht Club

When do I have to turn off my engine in a pursuit race?

Several people have asked me this question over the years about when I have to turn off my engine in a pursuit start.
The answer to the question is in one of the Definitions of the racing rules and one item in the RBYC Sailing Instructions.
Firstly the definition in the racing rules of “Racing” in part says “A boat is racing from her preparatory signal …..”, where the preparatory signal is when the “P”, “U” or Black flag goes up which is generally four minutes before the start.
The next part is in the RBYC Sailing Instructions where 10.2 states “The preparatory signal for a boat in a Pursuit race shall be four minutes before her allocated handicap start time. “

So you must have your engine off at least four minutes prior to your allocated start time which is when you are then considered to be “Racing”.
