Olsen Hooper 2024

Volunteers on the Water Safety was carefully managed at one of the RBYC Iceberrger’s annual events on Sunday. It was impressive to see so many participants donning the old fashioned costumes to swim a variety of distances in the traditional Olsen Hooper swim.. The sea was a warm (for Icebergers) but there was a fair bit of chop making for challenging …

Etchells Christmas Cup
Almost half the fleet planning to do the Worlds in January will be getting some welcome practice this coming weekend, sailing in the 3 day Christmas Cup regatta (13-15 December). Excitement is building for the Worlds!
Dragon Vic States
Once the Etchells Worlds is over, that doesn’t mean regatta season is over. RBYC is pleased to be hosting the Victoria State Titles on 8, 9 February. Before that, RBYC Dragon sailors Chas Stanton and Maia Hester will be sailing in the Nationals over at RFBYC in WA, crewing for Hugh Howard, who will be towing his Dragon across the country to compete.

Cruising News

With inclement weather forecast for the annual Hardstand Christmas Party last Saturday evening (for the second year in a row), the party was once again relocated to the Jock Sturrock Centre. Despite the change of location, a good crowd turned out to celebrate the year gone by, enjoy the BBQ and company (and carol singing) and discuss plans for coming year.
Our thanks to Club management and staff for making the Jock Sturrock Centre available when the forecast turned dodgy, and for moving tables and chairs in there for us to use.
****
Our first event of 2025 will the annual Cruising Group Birthday Cruise to RYCV in Williamstown, to be held on Sunday 19th January. for. This will be our 34th such cruise to Royals, which was first held in 1991 as the inaugural event of the then newly formed RBYC Cruising Group.

The 2025 Bass Strait Cruise is scheduled for Sat Feb 22nd to Monday March 10th 2025. An information session was held last Friday evening, and at this stage, five Brighton boats and two Sandringham boats have expressed interest in participating, with a few more possible.
The emphasis of this “Cruise in Company” is on having fun, and the camaraderie and safety of being in the company of other boats. This cruise is a great opportunity for less experienced skippers/crews to gain experience in the company of more experienced skippers and crews, and to visit locations beyond the usual Bay locations. Social events take place along the way, including the annual Cruising Group Bocce championship, Klopp competitions, and a themed BBQ. We welcome sailing and power boats to join in and participate.
Depending on the weather, the fleet may decide to head west from Port Phillip Heads to destinations such as Apollo Bay, and then perhaps on to King Island and to NW Tasmania. Alternatively, if the wind is in the other direction, then the fleet may decide to head east to Wilsons Promontory and locations such as Refuge Cove and Corner inlet, and then possibly on to Deal Island and /or Flinders Island. Where we go, and when, is very weather dependent (and there have been a one or two years when the fleet has not left Port Phillip Bay because of the weather conditions and forecast).
