RBYC Wins Big at Victorian Sailing Awards 2018-19

The Victorian Sailing Awards recognise the outstanding performances of sailors, volunteers, officials and clubs in Victoria for the 2018-19 Season. This year, Royal Brighton Yacht Club was awarded Yacht Club of the Year, the Sustainability Award and Sailor of the Year with a Disability.

The Victorian Sailing Awards have been the premier off-water celebration for many decades. These awards recognise the outstanding performances of sailors, volunteers, officials and clubs in Victoria for the 2018-19 Season. This year, Royal Brighton Yacht Club was awarded Yacht Club of the Year and the Sustainability Award. RBYC members: Neil Patterson, Thomas Trotman and Matty Goss, were also award recipients, taking home Sailor of the Year with a Disability, Male Sailor of the Year and Junior Sailor of the Year respectively.

Victorian Club of the Year Award: During the 2018-19 Season Royal Brighton Yacht Club implemented several initiatives that increased membership and the activity level of existing members. These initiatives include, but are not limited to, our successful ‘Bootcamp for Sailors’ and Junior & Youth training programs. The Club of the Year Award recognises and promotes the hard work behind these initiatives and the overall success of Royal Brighton Yacht Club.

Sustainability Award: Throughout the George Mac Regatta 2019, Royal Brighton Yacht Club focused on minimising our environmental impact, educating the community about environmental practices and engaging with the Bayside community. The Sustainability Award acknowledges our Club’s environmental and community-oriented practices during the Regatta.

Sailor of the Year with a Disability: RBYC member and sailor, Neil Patterson, was awarded Sailor of the Year with a Disability. The award was introduced in 2000 to acknowledge the outstanding achievements of those sailors with a disability who have overcome adversity and exemplified the spirit of sailing. Neil’s award comes after his recent success at the Para World Sailing Championships 2018 (11th place) and Sail Melbourne 2018 (3rd Place, 1st Para sailor).

Male Sailor of the Year: Thomas Trotman was awarded Male Sailor of the Year following his success over the past year. Trotman’s standout accomplishment was placing first in the 2018 Waszp European Championship in Lake Garda. The Victorian Sailing Award is a tremendous achievement for the RBYC sailor.

Junior Sailor of the Year: The Victorian Sailing Awards recognised Matty Goss as Junior Sailor of the Year. This is a remarkable achievement for Goss and an award that we believe will be one among many for the young sailor.

The Victorian Sailing Awards speak to the overall excellence of Royal Brighton Yacht Club. They reflect our Club’s achievements and hard work during the 2018-19 Season, which we endeavour to uphold and improve upon in 2020.
